August 2022 Newsletter

Updated: Jan 25

“It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it.” — Oscar Wilde It's the dog days of summer--but we're featuring cats for August! We've invited Fred Strobel to show his extraordinary photographs--stop by and enjoy the inscrutable portraits of felines..."What are they thinking?" Join us on Saturday, August 6th at our purrrrfect reception for Fred and enjoy the show! We've enjoyed great discussions when we meet for our monthly "Living Room Conversations"--we celebrate diversity in opinion and celebrate how we pull off discussing a variety of topics in a fun, civil and informative way. It can be done! And, books can spark an amazing response in readers--we're featuring two displays-- titles that have been banned through the years and winners of the Pulitzer Prize--There's something for everyone in these two collections! And, check out Emily's "space" collection of books--she's been putting it together ever since the images of the James Webb Space Telescope began coming back. For more down-to-earth favorites we've assembled a group of books about camping, hiking, and enjoying America's wild places. Come and see us! And, tell us what you've been reading! We met photographer Fred Strobal at this year's Dog and Pony Show--he was awarded first place--and People's Choice--for a lovely photo of a dog that captivated viewer's hearts. And, now, we are treated to his cat portraits. In 2017 Atlanta's first cat cafe opened in Grant Park--customers interacted with adoptable cats from Paws Atlanta while enjoying hot or cold beverages. The cafe doubled the number of adoptions to 1,000! Fred took over 4,000 photos of the cafe's cats over five years until, sadly the Cafe closed in 2022. Fred has been photographing the cats and dogs of Paws Atlanta since 2013 to help them get adopted. Recently he has started photographing specially enabled dogs for Speak Rescue and Sanctuary. These dogs include some that are both deaf and blind. We are honored to show his work this month at A Novel Experience!

Stop by on this Saturday August 6th from 6-8 for our Reception--Enjoy the work and meet Fred! Plus, imagine what those cats were thinking when he took their pictures!
